DESCRIPTION:June is Lipoedema awareness month\, and currently 11% to 19% of the female population have it. It is frequently misdiagnosed by medical practitioners due to the lack of awareness of the condition\, and as a result a lot of women don’t know they have it. Lipoedema Australia is the national representative body for lipoedema. As a registered charity\, we are committed to directing and supporting research and medical recognition of lipoedema\, developing a comprehensive treatment/management plan and ultimately finding a cure. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly\, in its resolution 66/127\, designated 15 June as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).\nWEAAD is celebrated each year\, globally\, providing an opportunity for communities to stand together against the abuse\, mistreatment and neglect of older people. \nElder abuse comes in many forms. It can be financial\, emotional\, psychological\, physical\, sexual\, or social. Elder abuse can occur once\, or many times and can vary in severity from subtle through to extreme. It can include one or a combination of the different types of abuse.\nMost often\, elder abuse is carried out by someone known to the older person\, with two thirds of abusers being an adult child. Abusers can also be other family members\, relatives\, or friends.\nElder abuse affects people of all genders and all walks of life. The abuse\, however\, disproportionately affects women – two-thirds of people seeking help from SRV are women.\nCulturally and Linguistically Diverse communities\, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and LGBTQI+ communities are additionally vulnerable\, as are older people living in rural and regional communities. \nOld Treasury Building will be lit in purple for this event from sunrise to sunset.

DESCRIPTION:World Fragile X Day is 22 July. This day is celebrated in many countries around the world including Australia.\nSince 2016 Fragile X Association of Australia has invited significant landmarks across Australia to illuminate “ORANGE” on this day\, orange being the signature colour for Fragile X in Australia. \nFragile X syndrome is a genetic condition which is the leading cause of inherited intellectual disability. Thousands of families (around 90\,000 Australians) are impacted by Fragile X in some way – as carriers of the gene mutation that causes Fragile X syndrome\, or living with Fragile X syndrome. Fragile X conditions remain\, unfortunately\, frequently under-recognised and often misdiagnosed. DESCRIPTION:Threats to democratic and republican regimes in the contemporary world have caused historians to reflect on how they fail. Are they vulnerable to authoritarian and military threats\, or are they victims of their own shortcomings? Three historians of very different periods in world history join with host Peter McPhee to discuss this fundamental issue. \nHost:\nProfessor Peter McPhee is the Chair of the History Council of Victoria. He was appointed to a Personal Chair in History at the University of Melbourne in 1993. He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and then the University’s first Provost in 2007-09. He is now an Emeritus Professor. He has published widely on the history of France since 1770\, most recently Robespierre: a Revolutionary Life (2012); Liberty or Death: the French Revolution (2016); and An Environmental History of France: Making the Landscape 1770-2020 (2024). \nOur speakers:\nFrederik Vervaet – Reform Unwillingness and the Death of the Roman Republic\nFrederik Vervaet (PhD Ghent\, Flanders) is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Melbourne where he specializes in Roman sociopolitical and institutional history and its ceaseless relevance to our modern era. He is one of the editors of the collection\, How Republics Die: Creeping Authoritarianism in Ancient Rome and Beyond. \nDr Ángel Alcalde – Fascism and the Destruction of European Democracies in the 1930s\nDr Ángel Alcalde is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Melbourne. His recently completed book The Global Rise of Fascism is under contract with Cambridge University Press. \nDr Julia Bowes – Make America Great Again? A Historical Perspective on the Right and the Decline of Democracy in the United States\nDr Julia Bowes is a Lecturer in Gender History at the University of Melbourne. Her first book\, Every Man’s Home A Castle: Parental Rights and the Makings of Modern Conservatism\, will appear with Princeton University Press this April. \nThe seminar is part of an ongoing series\, Making Public Histories\, that is offered jointly by the Monash University History Program\, the History Council of Victoria and the Old Treasury Building. SUMMARY:Material Histories: Wearable Protest
DESCRIPTION:We live surrounded by material things. Some are mundane and utilitarian\, others exotic objects of desire\, but all our belongings have something to say about who we are and how we live. Objects reflect both culture and history. Individually and collectively\, they shape our lives\, link us to others and connect us to the past. Yet objects are often strangely absent from accounts of past lives. This seminar series aims to unpack some of the stories that objects can tell about the present and about the past.  We also hope to provide a forum for discussion for those of us interested in material histories. We aim to cast the net widely\, with no limitations on either time or space. \nFirst speaker:\nWhy are we dropping Holt on Hanoi? How the creation and wearing of protest badges underpinned anti-Vietnam protest\nDr Hannah Viney\nThe Vietnam War and conscription was one of the most divisive debates during Harold Holt’s brief time as Prime Minister\, so it’s no wonder his name appears on many creative protest badges from the 1960s. Protest badges have been around for a long time\, but the number exploded during the Vietnam War years. This talk will ask why badges became such a popular protest tactic during the war\, and what studying these badges can tell us about the daily realities of activism.\nDr Hannah Viney is a history consultant and museum professional who specialises in Australian social and cultural history\, with a particular interest in the intersections between Cold War politics and gender history. \nSecond speaker:\nSubverting Femininity: Sewing Activist Aprons\nMargaret Anderson\nIf we think about wearable protest\, many of us will think first of t-shirts. Now produced in huge numbers\, t-shirts with political slogans are created in support of a bewildering range of causes\, across the entire political spectrum. Many are gender neutral. But there is an older history of protest garments\, dating to the early-twentieth century in Australia. Some\, like protest aprons\, were everyday\, feminine garments\, recast as activist objects. In this guise they both challenged and subverted traditional gender roles.\nMargaret Anderson is Director of the Old Treasury Building. A public historian\, she researches and writes on Victorian history\, women’s history\, the history and demography of the family and the practice of public history. \nMaterial Histories is presented by Old Treasury Building in partnership with Deakin University and Australian Catholic University.

SUMMARY:Global ITP Awareness Week 2026
DESCRIPTION:Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a rare autoimmune bleeding disorder. It causes the body’s immune system to destroy platelets and/or limits the production of new platelets. This affects the blood’s ability to clot. \nITP can occur at any age. It affects both children and adults. The specific cause isn’t known. There is no cure. The number of people with ITP at any given time in Australia and New Zealand is approximately 9.5 per 100\,000. \n2026 will be the 11th year that Global ITP Awareness Week has been held internationally. ITP Awareness Week (21–27 September 2026) is a designated week during which individuals worldwide come together to raise public awareness of the rare autoimmune disease\, immune thrombocytopenia\, and to spotlight the ITP patient experience. \nAs part of the #LightUp4ITP campaign\, landmarks across Australia and New Zealand will light up Purple to support those living with ITP. \nOld Treasury Building will be lit in purple for this event from sunrise to sunset.

DESCRIPTION:October 2026 marks Dysautonomia International’s 15th Global Dysautonomia Awareness Month campaign. \nEach year building and monument owners are asked to light up the night sky turquoise for Dysautonomia Awareness Month\nOn Friday October 2nd\, the world joins to ‘Turn the Town Turquoise’. \nDysautonomia Dysautonomia (pronounced dis-oughta’-no-me-uh) is an umbrella term that includes many different diseases of the autonomic nervous system. Over 70 million people worldwide live with a form of dysautonomia. The autonomic nervous system controls all of the involuntary functions of the body\, like heart rate\, blood pressure\, digestion\, and temperature control. Some forms of dysautonomia are mild\, while others are fatal\, but all forms of dysautonomia can be very debilitating. People with dysautonomia often suffer for years undiagnosed\, due to a lack of awareness. \nOld Treasury Building will be lit in turquoise for this event from sunrise to sunset.

SUMMARY:World Meningitis Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Since 2009\, people worldwide have united on World Meningitis Day to call for a future free from this devastating disease. Today\, co-ordinated by Meningitis Research Foundation\, it’s now the world’s largest day of action on meningitis. \nMeningitis is the swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord (the meninges). It can affect anyone\, anywhere at any time. Meningitis is largely preventable\, but people still die in less than 24 hours. This is why we must act now to defeat it. \nOld Treasury Building will be lit purple from sunset to sunrise for this event.

SUMMARY:Light it Red for Dyslexia 2026
DESCRIPTION:Ask any dyslexic about their school experience and they will tell you about the gut wrenching fear of receiving back their school work covered in red crosses and comments. When Light it Red started in 2015\, it was about taking back the power of that colour to raise awareness. The colour influenced our name Code Read (pronounced RED) Dyslexia Network. Red is disruptive and cannot be ignored but it also highlights the urgency of the situation. In effect we wanted to say that it is time to stop sweeping this important issue under the carpet and take action. \nCode REaD Dyslexia Network’s annual  ‘Light it Red for Dyslexia’ campaign\, designed to Raise Dyslexia Awareness by lighting significant monuments\, buildings and landmarks RED during Dyslexia Awareness Month each October. \nOld Treasury Building will be lit in red for this event from sunrise to sunset.

SUMMARY:Material Histories: Collision: Fashion and Fabrics
DESCRIPTION:We live surrounded by material things. Some are mundane and utilitarian\, others exotic objects of desire\, but all our belongings have something to say about who we are and how we live. Objects reflect both culture and history. Individually and collectively\, they shape our lives\, link us to others and connect us to the past. Yet objects are often strangely absent from accounts of past lives. This seminar series aims to unpack some of the stories that objects can tell about the present and about the past.  We also hope to provide a forum for discussion for those of us interested in material histories. We aim to cast the net widely\, with no limitations on either time or space. \nHow does fabric define a designer? Hartnell of Melbourne used expensive French lace in their winning design for the 1963 Gown of the Year\, while Jenny Bannister’s use of recycled materials made her a counter-culture rebel! This talk will look at two eras of Melbourne fashion\, the 1960s and the emerging youth market demanding modern styles\, and the 1970s\, a time of experimentation and a turn towards unconventional materials. \nFirst speaker:\nGown of the Year 1963\nJess Curtain\, Brighton Historical Society \nIt took 300 hours and 3\,000 pounds to create\, the imported French lace stitched by hand and embellished with thousands of glistening beads. Designed by Lorna White for Hartnell of Melbourne\, the winning 1963 Gown of the Year is both a stunning work of craftsmanship and a snapshot of a particular time in Melbourne fashion—a time when Flinders Lane was still the bustling heart of Australia’s rag trade\, with many businesses owned by Jewish migrant families\, and high-end fashion houses were able to splash lavish resources on a single showpiece. But by 1963\, a new youth market was emerging\, demanding modern and affordable styles\, and labels like Hartnell would be forced to adapt. \n  \nSecond speaker:\nJenny Bannister: punk icon and fashion trailblazer\nDorela Gerardi\, Museums Victoria \nJenny Bannister is one of Australia’s most iconic fashion designers. Emerging in the late 1970s\, her clothes during this period are marked by material experimentation and a counter-culture rebellion that signify the spirit of the times. From fabric remnants and material detritus\, Jenny created clothes that were unconventional\, experimental\, exuberant\, and exciting. Today\, Jenny’s early commitment to material reclamation and reuse positions her a trailblazer of upcycled fashion. Critically\, her work maintains a powerful resonance in contemporary fashion and its efforts to address the concerns of sustainability in design. \nDorela is currently the Curator\, Jenny Bannister Collection at Museums Victoria. She also has extensive experience working as Collections Manager in the museum and local government sectors. Her early career was in fashion and costume design with a focus on creating hand-printed custom pieces. \n  \nMaterial Histories is presented by Old Treasury Building in partnership with Deakin University and Australian Catholic University. \n  \n‘Collision: Fashion and Fabrics’ is presented as part of the Melbourne Fashion Week Independent Program.

DESCRIPTION:Those of us living in modern Western cities mostly take personal hygiene for granted. We have access to abundant fresh (and safe) water\, more varieties of soap and other cleaning products then we can possibly need and easy access to a bathroom on a daily basis. Indeed\, the average home in Australia in 2023 apparently had 2.6 bathrooms. That is almost one each! But imagine if we had none of these things. What would daily life be like? \nJoin Margaret Anderson as she examines the grubby realities of life in Melbourne before 1900\, and then charts the changes that the twentieth century brought to homes and hygiene.
