The Power of Display: Collecting and Exhibiting Religious Art in Colonial Melbourne
17 September at 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Making two return trips to Europe, Melbourne’s Archbishop James Goold would be followed soon after by crates of Italian paintings; a mix of old and new works destined for a variety of locations across the colonial city. Along with these paintings, the Archbishop brought back an eye for display, refined by visits to the great Cathedrals of Italy and designed to inspire piety among churchgoers. This lecture will use a variety of visual documents to explore these trends in collection and display seen in the early Melbourne Catholic churches.
