Bucharest founded in 1459 became the capital of Romania in 1862. It is the centre of Romanian media, culture, and art. It offers a splendid range of architecture gems that are a mix of historical (Neoclassical and Art Nouveau), interbellum (Bauhaus and Art Deco), communist era and modern. Such was the city’s standing was referred as ‘Paris of the East’. The historic city centre has been heavily damaged by war, earthquakes, and even Nicolae Ceaușescu’s program of systematization, a real effort has been made salvage and save the buildings that have survived Today, Bucharest is experiencing an economic and cultural boom.
