Browsing the Shelves: Books in an Exhibition
6 February at 11:00 AM - 12:00 PMFree
Join Shane Carmody as he describes the story behind the books from the library displayed in the exhibition The Invention of Melbourne: A Baroque Archbishop and a Gothic Architect. Drawn from the library of James Alipius Goold (1812 – 1886), first Catholic Bishop of Melbourne, the books on display are just a sample of one of the finest libraries assembled in colonial Melbourne. Shane will tell the story of the books, their authors and publishers, and along the way the story of Goold and his fabulous library.
Shane Carmody is an historian with a great love of libraries and archives. He has published widely on the history of the book and the history of collections and is a chief investigator along with Professor Emerita Jaynie Anderson, and Rev. Dr Max Vodola in the Australian Research Council project on the cultural legacy of Archbishop Goold.
