School Programs 2010

Old Treasury Building invites teachers and students to visit the new fascinating ‘Victorian Archival Treasures’ exhibitions. Students can discover the stories attached to the rare and interesting original documents, maps and photographs from the state archive collection of Public Record Office Victoria (PROV).

Students can also explore the gold vaults and the impact of gold on early Melbourne and the new colony of Victoria. ‘Growing up in Old Treasury’ relates the story of the caretaker John Maynard and his family who lived in the basement of the building from 1916-1928.

Programs relate to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), in particular History, Civics and Citizenship, and the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Bookings essential: 03 9651 2233

Victorian Archival Treasures

Indigenous Victorians

Years 5-10
KEY DOMAINS: History, Civics and Citizenship

‘Indigenous Victoria’ documents the early interactions between Government and Indigenous people in Victoria. Students will discover why the Native Police (Victoria’s first police force) was formed in 1842 and their various duties in Melbourne, the gold fields and regional areas. Who was William Barak? Why was he petitioning the government? The Pepper family story demonstrates the rights, rules and regulations that dominated the lives of Indigenous people on mission stations well into the 20th century.

The timeline outlines key laws and events that have impacted on Indigenous people in Victoria.

Early Melbourne

Years 5-10

Students will discover how the Port Philip District was illegally settled by Batman and Fawkner and then developed into a thriving city. Students can compare and contrast the city today with Hoddle’s original plans for the city. What role did the Yarra River play in Melbourne’s settlement? How has the Yarra changed? Why was the Burke and Wills 1860 expedition such a triumph and a disaster? Students learn how the expedition camels were first introduced to Australia.

Ned Kelly

Years 5-10
KEY DOMAINS: History, Civics and Citizenship

Students will discover what the ‘Babington letter’ is and its significance. Original telegrams and police records are used for students to learn about the police hunt and capture of the Kelly gang and the deaths of three Victorian policemen. The world’s first feature film made in Australia in 1906 about the Kelly Gang was banned. Students find out why this happened. The rare original film poster is displayed.

Criminals

Years 5-10 and VCE

Squizzy Taylor gained notoriety in the 1920s in Melbourne for race fixing, stand over methods and his American bootlegger style. Students learn about the gang wars, slums and Squizzy’s notorious depression era activities .

The Colin Ross story is a fascinating criminal case. Students will discover the twists and turns of this extraordinary trial. They will learn how forensic evidence was used to hang him in 1922 and then used again to have him pardoned in 2008.

Victorian Democracy

Years 5-10 and VCE

The Eureka rebellion unleashed a wave of democratic demands from the gold field miners. Viewing original documents (such as the Bakery Hill poster and the Eureka Treason Trial map) students will discover how the democratic movement developed. What was the role of the governors? What was the impact of separation from NSW, the introduction of the Secret Ballot, and the Women’s Suffrage movement in Victoria?
